In 1943, Gruen manufactured a series of pilot's watches with 24-hour dials for Pan American World Airways. During the war, the Pan Am ceased all commercial flights and flew exclusively for the U.S. military. The general public could not buy watches manufactured by the American watch companies at the time because all production was diverted for the war effort. Gruen was immune to this change because their movements were made in Switzerland and they never had to cease overseas production. They did however shift domestic production to the war effort and manufactured many gauges and instruments for the military. Once the war ended consumers started to purchase those watches that had the appeal of the military look. Airplane travel was all the rage and Gruen ran several ads showing the watch with the famous Pan American Clipper flying boat. This is a Gruen Veri-Thin , Precision model made for the military afficianado, circa 1945. The watch has a two tone, rose gold filled and stainless steel case that is 32mm wide (not including the crown) and 38mm long. We have had this "Pan Am" model before but never in this fantastic two-toned case. The main case body is stainless steel but the lugs are rose gold filled.....quite spectacular! Now take a look at the interesting dial in the "Zoom-In" photos. The rose colored dial is contrasted with the strong black banding of the inner and outer chapter rings. The inner one displays a 24 hour demarcation for military time and the outer one is the minute track with 5 minute incremental markers. The final visual treat is the red sweep second hand that ticks away the seconds for accurate synchronization of maneuvers. The watch has a 17 jewel precision movement that is as clean as a whistle, and in excellent condition mechanically, thanks to our watchmakers efforts!
